Task 4: the dark side of the textbooks

hi sweeties!  i’m Mª Luisa and this week i’m the translator, so here I’m going to give you the most important terms that we have found.

  • Textbooks: Nobody knows why textbooks is nowadays the most important resource in education, maybe because of the laziness of teachers who do not want to think a bit in their methods of teaching. But, and because other reasons, children are limited in their way of learning and discovering a lot of interesting concepts, textbooks think for them so, why they would do an effort?
  • Comic: there are many ways in order to define comics. Will Eisner defines comics as a sequential art. Scott McCloud defines comics as juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence with the objective of convey information and produce an aesthetic response in the viewer. Another and an easier definition of comics could be a visual medium, often combined with text, that express ideas via images. Normally, juxtaposed sequences of panels of images.
  • Infographic:are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present complex information quickly and clearly. They can improve cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends. The process of creating infographics can be referred to as data visualization, nformation design, or information architecture.The entire infographic could potentially be interactive, allowing people to play with the data, turn knobs and dials and get a feel for the data behind the visual. Additionally, savvy users could also access and download or fork the data behind each inographic.
  • Editorial: A type of company that is responsible for the publication and distribution of writings. The edition of the book does not include the activity of circulating the information available to the general public (distribution). In some cases, authors may be their own publishers.
  • Ideology: The textbooks are in many times influenced by the political situation of the moment or the type of editorial which create it. It is very worrying because children grow influenced by the way of thinking of others and not by themselves. It is an error because they do not have open-mind in most cases and in the future we do not have citizens with their own ideas, they just follow most powerful people

Task 4: The dark side of textbooks

Hi there! It’s Ester, the facilitator of Sweet chilli pepper during this week.

This time the topic we worked on was quite interesting for us (we had to explore every negative side of textbooks), as future teachers that we are, and for this reason, I did not have to motivate very much my group to do the task.

The first thing that I decided to do was to distribute all the readings that our teacher recommended to the class in order to familiarize ourselves with the topic. I thought that a good strategy to follow could be to give to each person of my group a reading and afterwards, they could explain to the whole group what the document was about.

Once we did that, I wanted to do a brainstorm in order to find the main ideas that we had to explain and that is the next thing that we did. After that, I told them that we had to choose the format in which we were going to make our artefact, and after a little discussion, we agreed to go for the comic (which you can see in our section of artefacts).

From that point on, everything was easier since the main decisions were already made and we just had to search for a web tool that allowed us to create a comic and make some nice vignettes.

I have to say that I’ve enjoyed this role in view of the fact that I don’t really find difficult to make decisions and to be a leader as long as I feel comfortable with my workmates, which actually is the case. Furthermore, I think that working on something that you find gripping is always going to be easier that doing it with something that get you bored.












Task 4: The dark side of textbooks

Hi, guys!

I’m María Martínez and this week I have been the journalist of the group.

To begin with, this week’s task was called “The dark side of textbooks; Linda explained us on Monday the work we had to carry out for next Wednesday and we were told that the format of the presentation would be a surprise and actually it was.

As soon as we knew what we had to do we started working on it. We began to work n class where Ester, as our facilitator, told us what we had to do.  Each text Linda sent to us to get informed was distributed and then, we put in common what we had read.


On Tuesday, we decided what artefact we would use in order to present our work. We decided to choose a comic in order to explain “the dark side of textbooks”.

In order to do the comic, first of all, we made a drawing and tried to distribute in a propper way each idea in a picture and then, we decided the electronic tool in order to do a good visual artefact that would help our star Celia to explain the task.IMG_20160315_183655IMG_20160316_112408


On Wednesday, Linda told us the format we would use to work the task in class. Stars were distributed along the class and each one was assigned a number, each member of the group chose a number and went with the star that had the same number,in that way new groups were formed. Once groups were formed the star, who would be the boss of the new group, explained her work about “The dark side of textbooks” and then we had to make a question about the topic which could be used in an oral exam, and finally the star had to present it in front of the class.

Finally, changing the groups was an oportunity to see how it would be to work with different partners and different ideas for the same task, searching for a good question helped us to develop one important fact in the teaching process which is to select good questions for a specific type of exam, in this case an oral exam.

Task 4: The Dark side of Textbooks

Hello there, my name is Celia and I am the star of this week´s activity! In this post I will explain what we did to explain the dark side of textbooks and also what I had to do on the day of the presentation.

The activity of this week consisted of making a comic, an info-graphic or a Twitter timeline explaining the dark side of textbooks. In our case we chose a comic (that you can see in the artefacts of task 4) explaining the main six drawbacks that textbooks have. Once we finished our comic I had to study it a bit at home due to I had the presentation the next day and I wanted to give a really good explanation of our work to our classmates.

The day of the presentation the profesor told all the students except the stars of each group to choose a number between one and eight, depending the number they had chosen they were in one group or in another. I was the group number eight and all the people who chose the number eight had to come with me. Once all the groups were formed I explained to my group our comic and they had to tell me what they would have changed about it. They told that they would not change anything about the comic because it included all the important aspects of the dark side of textbooks, so that is great because they thought that we did well our work!. Finally we had to make up a question that in our opinion would be appropriate to ask in the oral exam about the dark side of textbooks. Our question was: “Why do you think this topic is important for your learning as future teacher? ”

In my opinion, although it is a little bit stressful being the star due to you represent all your group members and the work we have done, I have loved being the star of this week´s activity because I think this topic is very interesting and important to know for you as  future teacher, and also the comic was so much fun to do!

Task 4: Reflection for this week

Hi everyone! I’m Alejandra and this week I have been the analyst. First of all I’d like to say that this task have been quite interesting for me and I hope that for you too.

As you already know the analyst is in charge of telling you how our work have done this week and in which aspect we have improved or not.

To begin with, I reckon that as time goes by, we have improved a lot as a group, I mean, at the beginning, we worked well together but now, we are improving ourselves in a great way. This task has made things easier too, ‘the dark side of textbooks’ is a good issue to talk to and for us, as future teachers, is important to consider the good and the bad part of all our resources, even textbooks.

In our task what we have to do is to figure out the drawbacks of textbooks and create something to spread it. We decided to make a comic in order to show these disadvantages in a funny way.

Probably most of you think textbooks are an essencial tool in classroom and in every learning way, however, that’s not true. I agree that textbooks have been very important some time ago, but nowadays we can enjoy all this technological resources to improve education, not only here, in Spain, but in the whole world.

Everything in life has its flaws, nevertheless, some flaws are worst than others. It is true that books are too heavy for children, but from my point of view, I can’t stand that a textbook was so pricey. Education is not a privilege, is a right. Nowadays, there are a lot of parents who can’t pay all those textbook for the children, they have to borrow them but, suddenly, editorials change the books, forcing families to buy them.

To sum up, I think we can use different types of resources to improve the knowledge that teachers give to their pupils, and I think, as a future teache, that it is very important. ICT’s are quite good, not only for saving money, which do not hurt either, but there is a lot of information in the Net and a lot of ways of learning that children could use and, in that way, they would improve their future and eventually, the society.
